Japanese fruit

The world's finest

In Japan, gifting fruit is a deeply rooted tradition expressing high respect and gratitude. These fruits are hand-grown with meticulous care to achieve flawless shapes, perfect sweetness and uniform colouring. They are elegantly boxed and presented like fine jewellery or vintage wine. No need to go to Harrods; we have a selection of highly sought-after Japanese luxury fruits right here! From Crown melons selling at £115 each to Miyazaki mangoes – a pair of which sold at auction for £4,000.

The Crown Melon is a hand-massaged, single-stem musk melon grown in Hokkaido or Shizuoka, famous for its perfectly round shape and rich melt-in-your-mouth sweetness. The Pione Grape is highly prized in Japan, frequently gifted in elaborate, cushioned boxes. The Miyazaki Mango, also known as Taiyo no Tamago, meaning Egg of the Sun, is a ruby-red mango, classified by meeting strict weight and sugar thresholds. It is highly prized for its intensely sweet, almost candy-like flavour, completely fibreless flesh, and a creamy, melting texture. The Fuyu Persimmon is a traditional autumn fruit valued for its crisp, sweet and non-astringent flesh.

Our Pione grapes are a favourite among customers for their slightly more accessible price. They can be bought individually for £2.70 each, a price which drew criticism on social media, for good reason. But it really is an experience like no other, our customers' faces go from unconvinced to amazed by the taste. Customers buy a single grape to try, and end up with one for each member of their family.

A taste of Japan

Pione grapes are a favourite in Japan, prized for their incredible sweetness, juicy texture and subtle wine-like flavour. Beneath their deep purple-red skin is translucent green flesh with a soft, jelly-like texture and just enough acidity to create a beautifully balanced sweet-tart flavour.

For the best experience, chill and peel them before enjoying fresh. Their rich sweetness and extraordinary juiciness make them feel almost like a dessert, or, as some say, a mouthful of wine.

Our Pione grapes are particularly popular with customers thanks to their more accessible price. At £2.70 each, they’re an easy way to experience something truly special. Many customers buy one to try, only to come back for enough to share with the whole family. Their reaction usually goes from scepticism to complete amazement.

Chii-Chan's Remembrance apple juice is a wonderful example of the care that can go into a single bottle of juice. Produced by Tandai Seika in Aomori Prefecture, this 100% straight-squeeze apple juice is made from an exquisite blend of five carefully selected Aomori apple varieties. Each contributes its own character, creating a beautifully balanced juice with mellow sweetness, gentle richness and a crisp, refreshing finish. The result is far more than simply apple juice; it is a carefully crafted expression of Aomori's exceptional fruit.

These are juices to savour, not simply to drink. Whether enjoyed chilled on their own or served as part of a special breakfast or occasion, they offer a rare opportunity to experience the flavour, craftsmanship and quality of Japanese fruit in a way you won't find anywhere else.

Some of our selection

Musk melon

Japanese muskmelons have become synonymous with the country's culture of exceptional fruit. Traditionally given as prestigious gifts, they are valued not simply as food, but for their beauty, fragrance and extraordinary eating experience.

What makes them so special is the extraordinary care given to every fruit. In premium production, growers may leave just a single melon on each plant, allowing it to receive the plant's full supply of nutrients. Throughout its growth, the fruit is individually tended and carefully rotated to encourage its perfectly rounded shape, even colouring and intricate lace-like netting.

Beneath that beautiful skin is pale, incredibly juicy flesh with a rich, honey-like sweetness and a soft, almost melting texture. It is intensely fragrant without being overpowering, creating a flavour that feels closer to a delicate dessert than an ordinary melon.

The time, space and painstaking attention required to produce a single beautifully formed melon are a large part of what makes premium Japanese melons so expensive. Very little is left to chance, with growers investing months of care into fruit that must meet exacting standards of appearance and quality.

The best way to enjoy one is simply chilled and served on its own. Cut it into elegant slices and allow the fragrance to develop before tasting. There is very little need to add anything; the melon itself is the experience.

Crown melon

Shizuoka Crown Melons represent perhaps the ultimate expression of Japan's dedication to premium fruit. Grown in Shizuoka, they have become famous for their extraordinary consistency, beauty and refinement, and are traditionally associated with luxury gifting.

Each plant is cultivated to produce just one melon. By removing competition for nutrients, growers can devote the plant's energy to a single fruit and carefully control its development. The melon is tended throughout its growth, resulting in the perfectly rounded shape, intricate netting and distinctive T-shaped stem associated with a premium Crown Melon.

Inside, the pale green flesh is extraordinarily juicy and fragrant, with a deep, refined sweetness and a smooth texture that seems to melt in the mouth. It is the combination of intense flavour, fragrance and texture that makes Crown Melon so remarkable; every element feels carefully balanced.

Their price reflects the remarkable amount of care required to produce a single fruit. Months of cultivation are dedicated to one melon, while only fruit that reaches the desired standards of appearance and quality can command the premium associated with Crown Melon.

For the best experience, serve it chilled and eat it fresh on its own. A Crown Melon deserves to be treated like a fine dessert: cut carefully, savour the aroma and let its natural sweetness take centre stage.

Pione grapes

Pione grapes are a celebrated Japanese variety prized for their extraordinary sweetness and luxurious eating quality. They are part of Japan's remarkable grape-growing culture, where familiar fruits are cultivated with an emphasis on flavour, appearance and consistency.

Their thick purple-red skins conceal translucent green flesh with a wonderfully soft, jelly-like texture. They are exceptionally juicy, with a beautifully balanced sweet-tart flavour and moderate acidity. There are even subtle wine-like notes; almost like taking a bite of a glass of wine.

Producing premium Japanese grapes requires considerably more care than growing fruit for the everyday market. Bunches are carefully cultivated and selected for their appearance and eating quality, with the finest fruit commanding a premium because of its scarcity, consistency and exceptional flavour.

Pione grapes are best enjoyed chilled and fresh. For the classic Japanese experience, chill them thoroughly, peel away the skin and eat them whole. Their intense sweetness and extraordinary juiciness make them feel almost like a naturally prepared dessert.

Pione Grapes
Shine muscat grapes

Known in Japan as 'sweet jewels', Shine Muscat grapes have become one of the country's most sought-after luxury fruits. Grown particularly in regions such as Yamanashi, where sunlight and temperatures are well suited to their cultivation, they are prized for combining extraordinary sweetness with an elegant appearance.

Growing them to premium quality takes remarkable patience and precision. Farmers carefully nurture each bunch, allowing the grapes to slowly develop and concentrate their sweetness before harvest. Once picked, the bunches are individually inspected to ensure they meet demanding standards for sugar content, weight and overall quality.

The result is a grape that feels completely different from an ordinary supermarket variety. Shine Muscats are large, exceptionally crisp and incredibly juicy, with a refined sweetness balanced by a refreshing citrus-like acidity. Their fragrance and clean finish make them particularly easy to savour.

Their premium price comes from the combination of intensive cultivation, careful selection and the consistency expected from luxury Japanese fruit. A beautiful bunch is not simply harvested; it has to earn its place through its appearance, weight and eating quality.

Enjoy them chilled and fresh, straight from the bunch. Their crisp texture and concentrated sweetness need no accompaniment, making them perfect for sharing, gifting or simply treating yourself to something exceptional.

Miyazaki mangoes

Miyazaki mangoes are among Japan's most prestigious fruits and have become internationally recognised as a symbol of luxury. Developed by farmers in Miyazaki during the 1980s, they are the result of meticulous cultivation and ideal growing conditions in southern Japan.

Their striking deep red to purple skin has earned them the nickname 'dragon's egg', but the real luxury is inside. The vivid golden flesh is intensely sweet, exceptionally juicy and almost completely fibreless. Its rich, creamy texture practically melts in the mouth, creating an experience unlike that of an ordinary mango.

The price begins to make sense when you see what goes into producing one. Mangoes are grown inside temperature-controlled greenhouses, where humidity, temperature and sunlight are carefully managed. Farmers may remove up to 80% of young buds so the remaining fruit receives more of the tree's nutrients.

As the mango develops, it is placed inside a protective net above a strategically positioned reflector, helping sunlight reach the fruit evenly. Rather than being picked by hand at an arbitrary point, the mango is allowed to naturally fall from the tree when it reaches full ripeness. Each fruit is then assessed for weight, sugar content, shape and appearance, with only the finest meeting premium standards.

Miyazaki mangoes are best enjoyed simply, allowing their natural sweetness and creamy texture to take centre stage. Serve them chilled, slice carefully around the stone and savour them slowly. This is fruit to experience rather than simply eat; every part of its cultivation has been designed to make that final bite exceptional.

Sun Fuji apple

Aomori is Japan's great apple-growing region, producing fruit renowned for its quality and distinctive flavour. The Sun Fuji is a premium expression of this tradition, combining the familiar pleasure of an apple with the precision and care associated with Japanese luxury fruit.

Its vibrant red skin reflects the sunlight it receives as it grows, while inside the apple can develop a distinctive 'honey core'. This occurs when sugars move towards the centre of the fruit in response to the dramatic temperature changes experienced during cultivation. In the region, temperatures can fluctuate enormously, and apples with a particularly prominent honey core can attract a higher market value.

The flavour is rich, intensely sweet and beautifully balanced by a gentle acidity. The combination of crisp texture, concentrated sweetness and delicate honeyed character makes it a distinctly different experience from an ordinary apple.

Its premium value comes from the growing conditions, careful cultivation and selection of fruit with the qualities most prized by Japanese consumers. The most exceptional examples are valued for their appearance as well as their eating quality, turning a familiar everyday fruit into something worthy of a luxury gift.

Enjoy a Sun Fuji chilled and fresh, ideally on its own so you can appreciate its crisp texture and sweetness. It also makes an elegant addition to a special breakfast or fruit platter, particularly when you want the fruit itself to be the centrepiece.

Fuyu persimmon

Persimmon has a special place in Japanese food culture and is traditionally associated with autumn. With around 1,000 varieties grown in Japan, Fuyu is one of the country's most popular and internationally recognised varieties. It offers a wonderful introduction to the Japanese appreciation of seasonal fruit.

Beneath its glossy orange skin is wonderfully sweet flesh with notes reminiscent of cinnamon, honey and brown sugar. Fuyu is naturally non-astringent, meaning it can be enjoyed while still firm and crisp, or left to ripen until the flesh becomes softer, juicier and even more intensely sweet.

The appeal of premium Japanese persimmons comes from their combination of variety, seasonality and careful cultivation. The fruit is selected for its appearance, texture and flavour, while rarer varieties can become particularly sought after. Our black sesame persimmons are an especially unusual example, developing their distinctive dark flesh through prolonged sunlight exposure and being harvested only once fully mature.

For the simplest experience, eat a Fuyu fresh and out of hand, adjusting the ripeness to your preference. Firm fruit gives a satisfying crisp bite, while fully mature fruit becomes soft, juicy and almost jam-like.

Their versatility also makes them wonderful in the kitchen. Try them in fruit salads, salsas, jams and chutneys, or bake them into tarts and pies. Whether crisp or perfectly ripe, Japanese persimmon offers an entirely different way to experience seasonal fruit.

Kotoka strawberries

Developed in Nara Prefecture, the Kotoka is a relatively rare Japanese strawberry prized for its exceptional sweetness, fragrance and beautiful appearance. It represents the Japanese approach to premium fruit perfectly: taking something familiar and cultivating it with extraordinary precision.

Kotoka strawberries are carefully grown to create a remarkable balance between intense sweetness and refreshing acidity. Their fragrance is immediately noticeable, while the soft, delicate flesh releases an exceptionally concentrated strawberry flavour and plenty of juice with every bite.

What makes premium Japanese strawberries so different is the importance placed on consistency as well as flavour. Berries are carefully selected for their shape, colour and size, so that the finished presentation is as beautiful as the fruit tastes. This meticulous cultivation and selection, combined with the rarity of premium varieties such as Kotoka, is a major part of their luxury value.

In Japan, premium strawberries are often presented in elegant packaging and given as thoughtful gifts for special occasions. Their price reflects not only the fruit itself, but the care taken to produce berries that look and taste exceptional.

Kotoka strawberries need very little to make them special. Serve them chilled and fresh, and eat them on their own. Take your time with them; their fragrance, sweetness and delicate texture are best appreciated without anything competing with the fruit.
